Yom Kippur

Why we celebrate it

At The Synagogues JWC, we celebrate Yom Kippur—the Day of Atonement—as one of the appointments on God's calendar. Found in Leviticus 16 and 23, Yom Kippur is known as the holiest day of the year, a time of repentance, reflection, and reconnection with God.

In the Old Covenant, Yom Kippur was the only day each year when the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies—the innermost chamber of the Tabernacle—where the presence of God dwelled.

  • There, he would make atonement for the sins of the entire nation by offering the blood of a spotless sacrifice (Leviticus 16:15–17).
  • It was a solemn day marked by fasting, repentance, and seeking God's mercy.

But access was limited. Only one man, once a year, could draw near to God’s glory.

Today, we celebrate Yom Kippur not by sacrificing animals, but by honoring the ultimate atonement made by Jesus Christ, our eternal High Priest.

  • As Hebrews 9:12 declares:
“He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.”

Through Jesus, the veil was torn (Matthew 27:51), and the way into the Holy of Holies was opened—not just to priests, but to every believer.
